Lovely shot trying to get in!

20 Sep, 2010

We ha ve left a few openings around the edge for them to get in or out. Its a shame we have to keep it netted, but we have seen the heron on a few occasions early morning and our neighbour saw it fly up from our pond one morning as he was leaving for work.

The herons can be a serious threat. We lived next door to a wonderful gardner and he had a fishpond...did the same as you and had to net it over....nice that you have got some entry points for the frogs/toads :)

Its a shame about the net really , as I think it spoils the look of the pond, but I couldn't have him having a fish breakfast.

I would have one netted too Lin as my friend s pon the Heron eats her fish too.

Its better to be safe than sorry isn't it 6d.?

Your right 6d and then theres the dragonfly, it you get their larvea in the pond they kill the fish and they will feed of the babies, so it keeps the dragonfly out aswell, although I think theyre beautiful. their larvae has big pincers to feed from the babies. :o(((

I did nt know that how interesting will inform my friend about it did nt realise dragon flies were a danger who would think of them.

Yes they look a bit like a caterpillars body but it has a little v shaped tail and six legs on the front of its body. I have just been reading in my book and it is saying they can live in the pond for at least 4 years before they hatch into dragonflies. I took some oxygen weed out from the pond because it was growing too thick and I found 2 amongst it. I will try and take a photo of the nymph (as they are called) from my book and put it in my photos for you to see. The book is showing 2 different kinds of them which are totally different in shape and size.
