Ah well - in that case it wouldn't be a weed - the dictionary defines a weed as an 'unwanted plant'. Hey let's start a campaign for the unweedification of this plant!

Aha! It definitely leaves the door open, and drinks the milk from the carton, too! It is a Cape Weed (Arctotheca calendula). For a short while we were trying it out as a ground cover, here in the desert. Unfortunately, the foliage looked too much like sow thistle to please any of the gardeners here. I didn't recognise it immediately, because the form we were trying was double, and didn't have the dark center. This is what it says in Wikipedia:
"Arctotheca calendula is a plant commonly known as cape weed, cape dandelion, or cape marigold because it originates from the Cape Province in South Africa. It is listed as a noxious weed in California and is an invasive weed in Australia as well."
