Daisy, how do you overwinter your Cannas?
7 Oct, 2010
This year some will go in the shed and some will be potted up and bought in to flower early next year.
7 Oct, 2010
Do you cut them down and store the bulbs? Or keep the whole plant going or both?
7 Oct, 2010
The ones going in the shed will be dried out (like dahlias) but the ones coming in the house will not, we will put some of the new shoots in compost and let them grow on.

We are doing a raised bed in the centre of the island Daisy and putting in an Acer Brilliantisimum, a choiysia and thought about a Canna or two..is it fussy about soil?
7 Oct, 2010
No not fussy, like plenty of feed and water.

thanks. I will mind that advice. I always tended to let things go their own way, but since retiring have spent more time on feeding, spraying against blackspot (carefully cos of our birds and the bees) and have been pleasantly surprised on how plants reward that care.
Had a problem with mildew this year tho..
9 Oct, 2010
We have a lot of mildew as well, it has been a bad year.

How do you dry out a dahlia?
11 Oct, 2010
Lifting & storing tubers - once frost has blackened the foliage cut down the top growth, then lift tubers carefully with a fork and remove excess soil. Any damaged tubers should be removed and the cut treated with sulphur. Stand tubers upside down in a frost-free place for a week to dry out, then trim off the stump and fibrous roots and shake off dried soil. Treat the crowns with a suitable fungicide powder, place in a box and cover with slightly damp peat. Store in a frost-free place for the winter............Ok Mushy
