Bird's-Nest Fern is widely grown here in the shade. It can become quite large as you can see by this one at the Marston House...actually this is one of several on the grounds. It needs to be protected from direct sun and snails here. Photo taken Oct. 7, 2010.

Really nice looking bird's nest fern...I've always wanted one. Have to find a shady area first.

Yes, the fronds grow to more than 6 feet/ 2 meters long. It is a tropical fern from Southeast Asia.

A handsome plant: There is a good fern collection at Kew which I worked with for 6 months. It has a couple of specimens of A.nidus, but they are no bigger or better than the one above.

Thanks! There's many large specimens like this one throughout San Diego.

Thanks! Wow! that's quite a compliment. I would think they would grow larger and nicer in a heated greenhouse.
