Wow, never seen so many. Heading our way?

I think these are heading for Florida or Texas, TOG. Or perhaps they are staying home at the lovely geese (Hilton)sanctuary not far from here on the St. Lawrence. They were endangered 50 yrs ago...but have since rebounded to the point of being a pest/health problem. (droppings all over the place in parks...can't let your dog run they'll get their feet covered with... ) bit of irony, they will let the geese in parks but not dogs!

We have Canada geese on the river here Lori and at this time of year they tend to gather into families and I see them flying south. About 30 to 50 in flight formation and it really gets to me hearing them talking to each other as they fly over.

Yes, I understand that they are now in the UK and across northern Europe. They are a very picturesque bird..and they are growing in numbers. There are those who would banish them from parks (especially NY city) and public water ways. They can be a danger around international airports, but that's true of many other birds as well... nature and our transport don't always mix well. But, I'm in agreement, Lindak, I love their gabbling. Conservationists are worried about the damage done by goose foraging in the arctic.. (the snow goose specifically)..there's some interesting reading on this subject on the Inet...You have to sift thro the good and the bad info tho. Sorry, TOG, just don't think of Canada's as being present in the UK!! I suppose they may well be headed your way! Hope you don't mind.

thanks for the info Lori, it always gives a deeper view of a picture with a little of the background knowledge which you clearly have.

I remember the Audaubon Society publications when I was a child. The other bird that they were working to protect was the Whooping Crane...it was down to a small number in the 60's and sanctuaries were set up for them. That was the dawn of the eco-conservation efforts. For a number of year the white tailed deer was protected and hunters could only take males. They have rebounded to the point that they are becoming a real hazard on northern highways.
