Karen, Yes it is `Rubra` .Bought it from a market stall in Bridgenorth in April this year for the princely sum of £3.
A bargain :o)

Oh yes, that was a bargain, and it is doing really well! I love Arbutus. I was sad when mine died after the winter. I read yesterday that they are supposed to be fully hardy, but I had always thought they were frost hardy. My one was planted on top of a lot of sand so that may have been the reason for the death, rather than the weather, but it was completely defoliated by the frosts.

Karen I shall watch it very carefully - I should hate any frost to have it. I first saw one of these this year when we went round the open gardens tour in fladbury. It was a small tree about 15ft high and the bark was a lovely rich toffee colour and peeling.
Mind you at my age I hope it doesn`t take too many years to get to that stage.lol.

It won't! It has so many attributes this plant...I really must try again. The bark is lovely isn't it! Some websites I've read say these are fully hardy, so hopefully you will have no problem. I think I shall try again but plant it in a different spot, or even put it in a pot!
