Next time I'm up at Shadowlands I'll put down some bark chippings to keep back the weeds and retain moisture. I'm also hoping to put some trailers to dangle over the rocks with flowers etc. For now, I planted a hawthorn at the back corner, before I put in the shrubs and ground cover, probably in the Spring now. I'm trying to do structural stuff during the winter (all those railway sleepers need wire brushing, an antifugal spray, and then coating with anti-rot stuff). I also planted an apple tree (another one going in soon). Just as I was thinking about planting, the rain came down, and I had to put the gooseberries in quickly on a temporary basis - not their final location. The red tiles will need scrubbing and re-grouting too, of course.

Plenty of progress to be seen there, P....and lots of work to undertake before spring. It is a perfect time to do your hard landscaping and I'll look forward to more photos as you progress.
