that looks lovely, such a healthy plant

Thank you, I had to push it up against the palm. It took a fall two days ago. Need to add some soil as well as it is top heavy now.

is it outside your shop

That's a wee little thing isn't it!!!!!

You still want to race Meanie? ;o)

27 Oct, 2010

Yes Yorkshire this one is outside my shop.

Of course!

Good. You know, mine might be big but it's outdoors and anything can go wrong. Yours is probably getting a lot of tlc and anything else you can give iit.

Mine will ultimately have to be kept to a manageable size, as it would never survive our winters outside.

You should take a cutting when it's big enough and try. This is a two year old plant taken from a tiny cutting.

27 Oct, 2010

I'll have to give that a go!

Alexandramou:

I don't think you'll have any problems with your plant outside...it's a tough plant! The only potential problem would be if a large frond from this Phoenix canariensis or dactylifera would fall on it. :>)

This is it's third winter in that possition. I'm not worried about that, I'll have hubby cut back the lower fronds if I see it's in any danger.....I don't want Meanie winning the race!!!! ;o)

Alexandramou:

You'll have no problems then. If Phoenix palms are cut back the green fronds are very strong.

6 Nov, 2010

Yes they are very strong....I got smacked in the head by one on a really windy day. ouch
I avoid them when it's windy and really cut them back when they get too low. They grow tall very fast when you cut them back don't they...

Alexandramou:

The fronds can be very dangerous...they have big spines towards the trunk. We have more problems with Phoenix roebellenii - Pygmy date palm...because it's planted everywhere here by the millions.

Yes, Phoenix species tend to grow very quickly when cut back regularly.
