The last Bougainvillea I saw was at the Eden Project in Cornwall. It was growing under glass but was no match for the above planting, a lovely colour too..

Rbtkew:

Thanks! Bougainvillea is very, very widely grown here. I'd like to get some of pics of them growing up really tall palms...as they can grow up to more than 60 feet/18 meters high in trees.

It looks like the variety I know as 'Rainbow Gold'.

Tugbrethil:

I think the variety on the right is: 'Orange King'. Rainbow Gold and California Gold are yellower to light gold in color.

Delonix:
Hmm. 'California Gold' as it is sold now is a light yellow orange, though it was originally pale gold when it first came out. I suspect that it has suffered a slight reversion, and the original propagation material has been lost--something that Monrovia Growers do on a regular basis! 'Rainbow Gold', however, has been deep orangish pink, changing to brick red as the nights get colder, for at least the last 30 years. Looking more closely at the picture, the one on the left looks more like 'Rainbow Gold', while the two on the right could easily be 'Orange King'. It's hard to tell when so many growers take little care in their labeling. One of our local growers repeatedly tries to pass off young plants of 'Rainbow Gold' as 'Rosenka'!

Tugbrethil:

I do know Bougainvillea varieties pretty well. But, sometimes it's difficult to tell them apart. So many of the varieties can look very similar.

Thanks! :>)

I've had too much practice, separating the 'Barbara Karst' from the 'James Walker'. The local growers deliver them all mixed together, and labeled as the former! Oh, well..it's just a pet peeve of mine!

Tugbrethil:

I'm a stickler for accurate plant identification. Too many times, plants at nurseries are inaccurately labeled.

Sadly, the nurserymen may know that they are mislabelled, but are unable to do anything about it, because the grower sent them that way, and it's illegal for the retailer to change the tags. Sometimes the grower can change them--if they admit there's a problem--but sometimes whoever sold them the starter plugs blocks that. "It's Complicated."

Tugbrethil:

Wow! It's too bad, it's so complicated.
