Pimenta dioica - Allspice Tree

Pimenta dioica - Allspice Tree (Pimenta dioica - Allspice Tree)

This Allspice tree in Balboa Park is loaded with fruit. Allspice is a very commonly used spice in Caribbean cooking. This is where I usually go to get my fresh Allspice every year. :>) Photo taken Nov. 11, 2010.

Yes I use it a lot especially around Christmas but I think over here it is from the West Indies?

This tree is native to the Caribbean. It's a very easy tree to grow here...and it's pretty drought tolerant also.

Thanks Delonix

Delonix, you certainly have some spectacular trees over there. I have a friend in Santa Barbara & she's lucky, also, to live in a climate that's so friendly to tropical plants.

Lauram:

Yes, we're very lucky here in San Diego to be able to grow so many tropical plants outside which most of the U.S. can't. San Diego, CA and Miami, Florida has the mildest climates in the U.S. outside of Hawai'i.

Meanie:

I can't say for certain. Although, it's highly unlikely a Nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans) would survive outside the the very hot and humid tropics.

I love allspice a much underrrated spice here.

I like it too...however, don't use it too much. At least I know where to get my fresh Allspice. lol! There's two almost 20ft/6.1m trees in this garden in Balboa Park.

Plenty to go around then?
