These plant were growing happily next to a huge mansion across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Island, CA. Photo taken Nov. 27, 2010.

Speaking of clumps, are you sure that's not Traveler's Tree? Strelitzia nicolai usually comes in massive clums, rather than single trunks.

These are just thinned out. Ravenala madagascariensis - Traveler's palms have much larger petioles and leaves...and the flowers bracts are green. I have some posted, check them out.
