Australian tree ferns are probably the most widely grown tree fern in California. The posted tree fern is still a baby at 10ft/3m tall. Australian tree fern can grow to more than 30ft/10m in time. Photo taken Dec. 2, 2010 in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA.

I used to have two, but the drought a few years back was too much for them to bear. I haven't as yet replaced them ... and wouldn't you know it, we haven't had really bad dry seasons since then.

It's my favorite tree fern after the gigantic black tree fern (Cyathea medullaris). There's some black tree ferns in San Diego that are more than 60ft./19m tall.

It sounds like a good time to plant some new ones...especially, with all the rain you've been receiving this year.
The Australian tree fern is pretty drought resistance here...however, protracted drought causes them to look very ratty...and in time they can succumb.

Andy, the only section where I could plant some tree ferns needs a whole lot of work ... it's the spot where they were growing before under the Cadaghi gums. The irrigation system has completely disintegrated out there and needs replacing ... an expensive exercise, so it's on the list of things to do!
I do have one little Cyathea out in the courtyard garden though ... in a pot. It's quite lovely, but still so small.

I understand expensive projects with lots of work. lol! I have several myself and my yard is much smaller than yours. :>)
It's amazing how quickly a small Australian tree fern will grow into a large one. People plant them in too small of spaces here all the time. Luckily, they're easily moved.

Marguerite:
The fronds are much wider on the Australian tree fern.
I have pics of both posted.
