Adenium obesum - Desert Rose

Adenium obesum - Desert Rose (Adenium obesum - Desert Rose)

My Desert Rose had many branches broken when a large pot from above came crashing down on it about 5 days ago. I hope it recovers somewhat quickly this summer...as this plant tends to be a slow grower. Photo taken Jan. 11, 2011.

Meanie:

Yes, very! This plant is over 6 years.

Not too slow then - I've just planted some Lapageria rosea seeds which take about four years to come to flower. I'll be lucky if it has more than five leaves after the first year apparently!

Thats a shame Andy.......

Yes, I was heart-broken. This is my largest Desert Rose...and it was looking so good! I think it still has a fairly decent shape though.

Meanie:

Adenium does grow pretty slowly. Although, it doesn't grow as slowly as Lapageria species. The Lapageria rosea in the San Francisco Bay Area seemed to grow relatively quickly, from what I remembered. I do know they're very slow from seed though.

It is just the first year or so that is slow apparently...

Meanie:

Are you going to plant your into the ground?

All the ones I've seen were growing in the ground.

It's too tender for that here. They're supposed to make a good pot specimen though.

Meanie:

I've always read it's a very hardy vine: to 20ºF/-6.6ºC.

What sort of flower does this plant produce? what a shame to lose so many branches, still it could have been worse......

-7ºc don't cut the mustard over here no more. Certainly not after the last couple of winters anyway....

Dottydaisy2:

It has many spectacular, large pink tubular flowers. I several pics posted.

Meanie:

Unfortunately, if it does get below -7C it's not a good outdoor vine.

Thanks will have a look....
