At the bottom of Palm Canyon, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA...there's several clumps of Cardamon (the spice of commerce). Photo taken Jan. 17, 2011.

I have never seen the plant for sale here,a shame really as I would like to try growing one. I presume they are tender.

I would guess they're tender; being native to tropical rainforest of Sri Lanka (Ceylon).

Cardamon is widely available for sale at any nursery here in San Diego, CA. It's an evergreen which does flower.

presumably the cardamon pods are the seed pods that you see after the flower has died?

Yes, cardamon is the seeds and the roots are used, also.

I think lots of herbs and spices are good for you, we dont use them enough, lots to learn i think!

Had it..gophers ate it. They didnt seem to bother Alpinia species- zerumbet or the dwarf, for some reason. This and my Green Ginger were taken out.

Sorry to hear about that. I know how horrible gophers can be, when I live in Fremont I was constantly battling them.
