This is a beautifully scented dwarf ( flower stems only 4 inches tall) dianthus growing in a customer's garden last summer . I grow about 200 dianthus a year which are light pink in colour . I took cuttings of this dark red version and hope over the next few years to propagate enugh to start selling them

Me too! My grandad was a champion rose grower and the only other plant he'd have in his garden was pinks. They were the old fashioned long stemmed pinks which smell lovely but have a tendency to look untidy because their stems easily collapse.
I only plant the dwarf ones because they require no attention at all. I don't even bother to remove the flowering stems... they still flower beautifully every year.
The two varieties I have form low clumps 12-18 inches in diameter within 3-4 years and being evergreen they suppress weeds and provide interest all year around

Yes. Mine flower in early June which is when I sell approximately 200 in flower. I keep back 40 which I divide 4-6 ways immediately after flowering and these provide the following years plants to sell.

Yes they're not entirely hardy in a very hard winter but I looked at mine today and although they're in 1 litre pots which were frozen solid for at least a month they look a bit ragged but OK.
