the canopy

the canopy (Populous balsamaea Tsuga canadensis Acer saccharum)

These are the tallest trees on the upper half of our property. It's kind of a puzzle.. so many medium sized trees left..very few ancients...and the forest is mostly deciduous.

They are very tall aren't they! I wonder if you will ever find out what happened to all the ancients.....perhaps the wood is not as old as you think?

From what I've been reading lately Karen..and from what observations I can make with snow on the ground..I think that the property has been logged of the White pine, maple, beech and oak. The only oaks left on the property are ancients that grew in the most inaccessible corner of the lot..(on a high rocky ridge)and the sugar maples near the house. Checked out tree tapping supplies at the hardware store... won't be long!
