Markhamia lutea- Markhamia, Nile Tulip Tree

Markhamia lutea- Markhamia, Nile Tulip Tree (Markhamia lutea- Markhamia, Nile Tulip Tree)

A close up of Markhamia's golden flowers and leaves shimmering in the very hot weather in North Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken May 3, 2011. Markhamia loves heat as it is native to equatorial eastern Africa. In Africa elephants eat the leaves of this tree.

Lovely coloured flower on this one makes a change from white or pinks.

Sixpence:

The flowers are golden-yellow and with red stripes in the throat.

I have a tall tree in my backyard...and several little seedlings from seeds from my tree (I started the seeds last summer).

That sounds lovely Andy and well done with the seeds off yours.

Sixpence:

I just trimmed my tree this evening...and noticed all the tips have flower buds. This means it should be flowering soon. :>)

The seeds grew so easily...I put many in one pot and almost all the seeds germinated. The pot looked like it had grass in it. lol! :>)

That is great Andy I shall look forward to seeing the flowers on your tree, wonderful how they germinate easy, lol about thinking it was grass.

Sometimes I'm amazed this tree grows here at all. It's native to equatorial eastern Africa...which is ultra-tropical. It is, however, a very tender tree.

It must like the conditions Andy as that is how most plants survive don't they if conditions are mimiced or simular.

Sixpence:

Yes, it does like San Diego's very mild subtropical climate.

Your Erythrina crista-galli, correct? It prefers very warm temps to bloom well (generally temps at or above 80ºF/27ºC during the day)
