Ok so I've started digging a new border. As you can see I have a lot to finish and I'm starting to think I've bit of more than I can chew!

Thank you very much WL that's kind of you! It's really a lot of fun I wish I had started sooner. The grass we are going to try and repair tomorrow by covering with topsoil and seed. I did consider other landscaping options but would love it to look like a woodland clearing so I really hope it works!

Well you're doing your grass seed/topsoil treatment at a good time now that we're getting a few rainy days. I love the woodland look. Have you seen Cristina's woodland section of her garden? It is lovely.
Our lady gardener is coming on Tuesday with her team to begin what she thinks will be a 2 day job to turf and put in borders for us. Getting excited....not long now :)

Oh no I'll have to have a look. I'm so jealous, wish someone would come and turf my garden the grass is horrible, full of dandelions and moss and all uneven and patchy. I can't see it ever being nice!

Cupcake...It would be nice for you if you were able to get some turf down...but you may just find after you re-seed your grassed area it will improve. Just remember to keep it well watered. There should be some ideas in GoyPedia at the bottom of the page (the alphabetical index below) about turf, grass etc. to give you some guidance to get your grass looking better. Take a peek.
Some members have mentioned going to B&Q to buy turf and meet with success on laying it in their gardens. Watch for the sales if that becomes necessary. Good luck!

Thanks WL, we have an amazing turf nursery near us which is not to expensive. It's more the work involved that's the issue. It's a rather large area and very rocky indeed. It would be back breaking and to be honest too time consuming just now. I couldnt manage it alone and combined with my full time work, my other half working a lot and the stuff we have going on, it's too big a project to take on right now.
I have invested in a weed puller which is just fantastic so I'm going to weed it tomorrow and then level it with soil and rake in the seed. That and the fact that dog cant get to it anymore might do the trick. We'll see how it pans out, I can always re-turf next year if necessary :0)

You do have a busy life so I can understand how difficult it would be to tackle turf laying just now....as you say it can wait until next year if the re-seeding isn't successful.
Do tell about your weed puller. I saw one advertised the other day and wondered if it would be worth purchasing it. It can be used from a standing position and claims to be able to get weeds out with success. What kind of weed puller have you got Cupcake? I'd be interested to know as bending down to pull weeds or being on my knees will be a no-brainer for me when it comes time to weed my borders!

Cristina...you did well getting your turf so reasonably! I can't remember where I saw the weeder mentioned (here on GoY or in a magazine)....I'll have to look for some clues and investigate further.

Cristina you're so lucky, are you laying it yourself?
WL I got my weeder from homebase. Ended up costing £22 with their 15% off weekend. It started out at about £26 which is fantastic as I just went to a local garden centre and it was £36! Mine is a Fiskars one, absolutely amazing. It doesn't always drag the whole root out and does leave holes but I weeded my whole lawn yesterday in less than 30 minutes!

PS: we have just finished laying lawn soil, lawn pre seed fertiliser and lawn seen then the rain came down :0) I hope it works!

Very good, Cupcake....the rain will certainly be a help with your seed just going down...a job well done :)
I've looked online at the weed puller you mention. It does have mixed reviews which is usually the way...some people will think it's the bees knees and others think it doesn't perform well enough! I'll look for it in the DIY section and get a closer look...thanks for the info, Cupcake.

Are you going to keep your grass or have you plans to replace it with paving/decking/turf? It's taking shape.... your previous photo showing the gate to the woodland garden and the gravelled area looked lovely so I'm sure you'll find things will go just as well in this section of your garden.
I'm on a steep learning curve too...but it is fun and enjoyable I agree :)
