Petunias on balcony railings 20-05-2011 002

This year I have planted Petunias for the first time since 2006. I've put some in the clay pots on the balcony railings. Others I've put in the pots & troughs on the balcony floor & therefore are not visible in this photo.

I didn't know what to put in the pots this year as my Geraniums & Fuchsias were killed off during the winter. My wife saw the Petunias in Tesco & bought a tray of 20 plants home for £3. I'd bought a couple of trays of Busy Lizzies for the same price a couple of days before. I also bought a couple of trays of bush Lobelia.

I started to put the Petunias in the pots thinking at first 2 plants per pot would be enough but as soon as I started I realised I needed 3 in each pot! 9 pots x 3 Petunias=27 plants! Therefore I was 7 plants short! I had to buy another tray!

I get the few plants I buy as plugs from Tesco's! I've had pretty good results generally over the years but you really need to get them the same day they arrive or they go quickly & also deteriorate quickly. They have nobody it seems who can look after the living plants while in the shop.

Today they obviously wanted to have a clear out so they reduced all bedding plants by 50%! I might have been tempted, especially as my wife asked me if I had heard the announcement over the tannoy system! But I'd seen them just a few minutes before & I saw that all the plants were in a very bad condition. Almost all of them were too dry as they were drooping & many of them were in a bad condition as well. It would have been a waste of money as a lot of them probably wouldn't survive or at least would have received a major check.

I'll see if I can get the seedling Clematis in the post tomorrow.
