We're really pleased with it, eventually, H is going to make detachable panels for the top, he has added a little roof, extended from the shed, so they can stay out in the rain, when we get some... :o)

You are so lucky, Crissue. Would love to keep chooks.

A few weeks on now...and it's working very well...Sadly I lost my eldest chook a couple of weeks ago...she was old, and I miss her...shame she didn't get but a little while in her new yard...

They don't need a lot of space, if you only have a couple Constance...

The do like like happy biddies....love their quiet gabble. Neighbour lost his rooster to a fox...I am a little concerned for the safety of chickens with foxes, coyotes and hawks... What is the average life span of a hen

Hi Lori...A good healthy Hen can go on and on...but stop laying I think after four or so years...
When we laid our yard wire, OH dug a trench and buried it, then put blocks on top, and covered it with soil...to stop digging critters...and you can wire over the top too, we get pigeons that try to pinch their food...but not hawks etc...When we rebuilt the Hen house, OH laid a wooden floor, which we cover with straw...and its so much easier to keep clean...and the waste goes in the compost bin...

I'm thinking seriously of getting some chooks...thanks for the quick primer... sounds like the chicken Taj Mahal! beside the other predators I mentioned we also have lynx, bear, weasel and marten...so will have to be very security conscious when I build my coop and run.
