We went to the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and falconry Centre about 20 mins drive from where we live.

Your right they wouldn't fly off, 2 breeding pairs very odd but there was nothing could be done.. the first time i heard their call i though someone was shouting help !! :-)

They do fly away - we saw one on a neighbour's roof last year and nobody in the vicinity kept peacocks. It eventually flew off somewhere else.

They need to be able to fly to get up into trees to roost. I read that the reason their tail feathers get just so long and no longer is a combination of showiness to attract the females balanced by the tails not trailing near the ground where predators can pull them down.
