Papaya carica 'Maradol' - Maradol Papaya

It's not a good idea to cut off the top of a papaya. Papayas have hallow trunks and if this happens about 100% of the time the bugs move in and kill the plant. Luckily, in this case it didn't get down to the hallow trunk.

A little like when I clip my dogs claws - I always go just that little too far and end up with blood everywhere!

I'm glad it survived, too. I didn't want to have to replace it. I started this plant from a seed. I start most of my papayas from seeds.

So if you plant a Papaya, you have to be sure that you can facilitate the height.
Jacks very good, despite knowing what will happen, he just sits their and lets me get on with it. I should walk him more on the pavement, but he pulls on the lead so it's easier to go around the lake where he can run off.

Yes, that's true. Papayas tend to grow upright until they need to be cut down (which is usually 5 - 10 years). You can pinch the tip to get it to branch...however, you have to be careful not to pinch too much of the top off. If you cut too much off then you have a hole leading through the hallow trunk....and this causes many problems.

Thanks! It's has many branches which have lots of flowers now. I'm looking forward to a bumper crop of papayas by late this year or early next year. The fruits take from 3 to 7 months to ripen.

i have never tried a papaya fruit.....im picking loads of fruit at the moment...strawberrys, black currants, goosoeberrys, and the first of the tomatoes....:-)

Papayas are so, so good. However, the ones sold in the stores can turn people off, because they can never taste as sweet and juicy as home-grown fruit.

It appears you have quite a selection of fruits growing in your garden. Do you can them or just eat them all?
