Aaaaargh!!! Calmed down now: it is actually a Pelargonium....a bit of a sore point with me! I wish sellers would actually correctly name plants when selling them. Anyway, a very nice colour and will keep for many years if pruned then potted up and overwintered inside.

Thanks for the info! Anyway I quite like it!

Thats okay: I grow Pelargoniums and Geraniums and do like plants correctly named (its my OCD according to my wife....).
The name confusion arose in the first place because Linnaeus didin't accept the name Pelargonium for the plants coming out of Africa, prefering to call them Geranium (which they had been called, incorrectly, in the first place). To make matters worse, some plants now known as Erodium, were also included in the genus Pelargonium. Unfortunately, the name stuck, and is proving difficult to limit to the correct plants. It is only in the last 10 years or so, that TV gardeners have regularly started calling the plants by their correct names.
Technically, shops, nurseries etc are in breach of the Trades Description Act for selling Pelargoniums as Geraniums, ut until someone forces the issue in court, we will be stuck with the wrong names being aplied.

WOW! lol Yes I agree with your wife lol..but its good to know these things. I will prolly still call it a Geranium! ;)

I must admit that i feel the same as Geraniumdad and ..... new gardeners would find their gardening SOOOOOOOO much easier if there was just the plants proper name used and not the old common names.

It is for this reason that gardening names can seem so hard going for some !

I understand from American members that the proper names are rarely used, but i don't have that on authority, gardening must be extremely difficult in those instances.

Ah well..I'm Scottish and my Mum always called them Geraniums..does it really matter that much? Its pretty anyway. Guess I'm common?

I do understand people using the older names: another pet hate is Montbretia being used instead of Crocosmia.
As I work with a lot of different animals (fish, insects, reptiles, mammals and birds), I find that using their correct names (scientific names) comes naturally as there can be an awful lot of confusion with common names.
Cichlid fish are a nightmare to correctly name but for the information on the display tanks, it has to be right!

Ah well I would never remember all these long names anyway lol :)

same here - covered ground in them with pebbles and all - they ruined some plants. I love geraniums - the smell of the leaves and bright red colours
