It's a good plant but the roots run like mad. I've also seen a green-leaved version (at Great Dixter) which is unexpectedly attractive as well

Ive put this under a cotoneaster Ive trained as a semi standard..its quite dry there and shady. It has flowered and looks good growing up thru the lower branches but the situation (so far) seems to have kept it under control.

My 'secret' is a product called Hammeredge. It is short pieces of interlocking plastic you can sink into the ground and I've got a large circle of it arond this plant. Occasionally a stray piece makes a dash for freedom that generally it keeps the roots under control
