Fantastic flowers arent they. Love 'em!
2 Aug, 2011
Certainly are. Just wish they lasted longer.
2 Aug, 2011
I say that about ALL my flowers Cinders.. I want them 365 days of the year lol!
2 Aug, 2011
But with these the bottom flowers are dying and theres still lots of buds at the top !

This looks very familiar... I love the colour and the ruffled petals! Do you have acidanthera too?...they have a lovely scent.
2 Aug, 2011
No Lori I don't have Acidanthera, they are quite large arent they ?
2 Aug, 2011
actually no...they aren't as large as the regular glads.. the flowers are star shaped with a burgundy red throat and they smell delicious. Acidanthera murielae...and now that they are tinkering with names again, it's also known as: G. callianthus.
4 Aug, 2011
Oh sounds nice, I'll have to look out for it.
4 Aug, 2011
They often call them sword lilies here in UK Cinders, altho some call all gladioli that name..but Ive seen packets of bulbs at garden centre of acidanthera with "Sword Lilies" on the packet.
4 Aug, 2011
Thanks for that Tet, so they are a type of gladioli are they.
4 Aug, 2011
Yes Cinders, as Lori says, they are Gladiolus Callianthus and they do have an amazing perfume..not hardy tho unless very, very sheltered. They dont fully conform to the glad. shape tho, tends to be more like the byzantine or what we call the cornish gladiolus.

Lovely. I planted some earlier in the year and ......... nothing. My wife likes them so we bought some cut ones from the supermarket.
5 Aug, 2011
Sorry to hear that Whitelillies, perhaps they got too wet and rotted.
5 Aug, 2011
Think you could be right Cinders. I'll try again next year, maybe start them off in the greenhouse.
5 Aug, 2011
Or don't plant them so early, I dont think I planted mine till end of April/May.
5 Aug, 2011
They are also called Abyssinian Glads... flower of many names still would smell as sweet. Will have to post a pic of the bed when mine start to flower...
5 Aug, 2011
Look forward to that Lori
5 Aug, 2011
Shove handfuls of grit in the hole before planting Whitelilies, and some sharp sand for drainage.
5 Aug, 2011
Thanks tetrarch, I'll try that.

My Acidantheras have the name 'Peacock Lilies' on the packet..they were planted at the end of April, and have made good growth wth sturdy strappy leaves..but I was informed they don't usually flower till late summer, which I assume means around end of August..wish they would get a move on,as fed up of waiting..that is,if they flower at all..!
7 Aug, 2011
Im sure they will Bloomer and they will be well worth the wait believe me! Try them in pots and you can lift the bulbs and overwinter, or better still bring pot in out of the frost, and they should increase nicely.
8 Aug, 2011
Oh heck, got the name wrong.! It says 'Peacock Orchid' not Lilies..I do have them in pots,Tet...I got some good advice from Spritzhenry on 'Questions'..and she suggested the same..I will try and overwinter them, but if they don't survive,I still have quite a few left..:Thanks for the advice..:o)
