A close up of my neighbor's red orchid. Photo taken July 30, 2011.

I didnt think these grew in soil but on rocks or trees? Can you fill me in?

Whilst the majority of Epidendrum species are epiphitic, there are a number of terrestrial species too. Rock growing Epis are thin on the ground Drc.

Yes, Epidendrum species are grown as epiphytes in their native habitat. However, they can easily be grown in the ground as long as they don't receive too much water.

I bought one in spring...it never bloomed. No wonder it was on sale for 5$!

Keep it fairly dry and in almost full sun and it'll bloom. It's the easiest orchid to bloom. It's also very hardy.
