Excellent show Balcony!
But I'm also a little baffled now - I thought that the blooms came before the foliage?

They can come at any time! But commercially supplied bulbs will generally flower before leaves appear. When you grow them later for yourself you will normally find they flower in April unless treated. Think of prepared Hyacinths that flower at Christmas but whose natural flowering period is in March/April.

Thanks Balcony!
Ignorance can be dangerous - every time that the foliage has appeared I've been starving mine of water so that it dies back in the hope of getting a bloom "next time"!

Glad to be of help but don't stop the leaves from growing - you will lose any flowers that might be forming inside the bulb. Just let the leaves die down in winter & keep your bulbs in a frost free place.

I've written a couple of blogs on Amaryllis if you would like to have a look.

Just found a page on my website that I included links to a couple of sites that give good advice on looking after Amaryllis so they flower in following years.

Thanks for that Balcony - have you seen my Scadoxus photos? I truly lovely member of the Amaryllidaceae family.

Thanks for that link, Meanie, I've been along for a visit & left a comment on a couple of your pictures. I like them very much indeed!

I also remember seeing these on another site just a couple o months ago, sorry can't pin the place down right now but I think it had something to do with strange plants, or at least with strange names that reminded one of fabled beasts, blood, vampires & the ilk! Well a popular name for this lovely flower is also Blood Lily! LOL!

And Fireball Lily too.
Have sent you a pm.

@ Meanie: Replied with PM.

So glad you liked them, Aleyna! :-)) Since I posted this photo all the red ones have died & the white one with red veining has opened 4 flowers. I also have a 4th pot with the red one that has a white stripe down each petal. Will upload a photo so you can see it.
