No it doesn't die...and it grows much larger here. It starts blooming around Christmas time here.

I think they only flower during winter...that's the only time I've noticed them flowering, anyway.

That's not too unusual. I see many photos of Nasturtiums growing and blooming in the UK in summer. They grow wild and bloom everywhere here in winter.
