Thanks C... might try your trick of not lifting them for next year, but giving them a mulch and some straw on top. (Thinks..............will that work in sub-zero Scotland, I wonder?) It's worth a try.

Its not normally the cold that kills those in the ground ( although they do obviously need protecting ) it's more the wet and the damp that makes them rot.
Here in north London I always lift mine but in my mother-in-law's garden a few miles away we cover them in a mound of peat or compost. Result....no difference.
