This rather odd looking plant is the NZ Native Honeysuckle, also known by its Maori name of Rewarewa.

Thanks Poppylover ..... some of our native plants are wierd but wonderful .... as are some of our native birds & caterpillars. Drc ... will check that out for you. I think it is evergreen, but not entirely positive about that.
