Starting to eat the last crop

They look lovely D... I tried potatoes this year for the first time in a large container but all I got was a bowl of marble sized things! I'm not going to bother again because it took up valuable flower space! :)

Ooh, I bet they're tasty!

Thanks S. Franny I find I grow very few now after the first crop and these were some that were grown in a bag, I find its important to count the weeks after planting and water very well.

How many weeks should it be Drc? I was told when the stems 'flop' they're ready...

It depends which crop I allowed 12 -14 weeks for the early one and 15 for this one Franny. I find them a bit big when the leaves flop over but I do like mine small.

These look lovely. I could just fancy some of those with a nice mixed salad, but I'll just have to buy mine as I had the same experience as Franny when I grew them in a container, so I never bothered again either...

I've had a decent crop from my Roosters. First time I've grown tatties in bags. Still got half of them to lift though but I've put the bags in the greenhouse incase we get a frost. I just lift them when i need them.
I think I overwatered them though as they tend to turn to mush in a blink of an eye when you boil them. I've found the secret is to par boil (for say 5 minutes) them wrap them in a greaseproof paper pouch them pop them in the over for 15 minutes, so they kinda steam! Mmmmm

I found only some of the original tubers went mushy Donna the potatoes were all ok. I agree though its hard to judge the watering, I found not to much to begin with and after 6-8 weeks I start to really water them.
