Plant combinations...- well to be honest it is hard question.
There is so many combinations. In general you can play with plant's forms - let's say you take prostrate Cotoneaster horizontalis (or Juniperus horizontalis) and than plant next to it for example Spiraea 'Goldmund' or Buxus (keep it clipped to ball shape) and finally plant a columnar Juniperus 'Skyrocket' or Chamaecyparis 'Elwoodii' to add hight to a group.
Just look at the plant form and play with them.
You can also use plant texture - size of the leaves - plant small leaved plant (Spirea) together with tall grasses and add a plant with coarse texture (big leaves) to add contrast - i.e. Fatsja japonica.

Thank you, but I was meaning combination to Acer sp. I have Acer aconitifolium and close to him I am trimming two small sorts of Chamaecyparis to ball shapes. However, that place still looks somehow empty. So I was thinking about something low, but covering the land under the Acer with green/flowers.

I would recommend Cotoneaster horizontalis - it's got white flowers followed by the berries:) All year round interest:)

Not fan of it too much, I know which one you mean. I also read it is not very suitable to gardens with roses. Isn´t there any ground covering plant. What about Calluna?

how about Pachysandra terminalis?

Yes, I can see it with the grass. For example Stipa tenuissima - my favourite.
