Remembering

There is not a single family in this part of Italy that didn't lose someone in the fighting or reprisals (don't forget Italy was occupied), and some lost everyone. (my little friend Maria, for example, lost every single one of her 14 brothers and sisters as well as her mother) However, no-one out here has a service quite like ours in the UK. We always stand for the 2 minutes' silence, and both of us end up crying. No knocks at the door or telephone calls get answered, and although neither of us lost anyone very close to us in either world war, the fact that nearly everyone went courageously and unquestioningly to defend our countries and our beliefs is very moving.
