This is the first bloom on my Mary Rose which I planted about 6 weeks ago. Taken on 4th Nov & now has another one out, with heaps of buds. Lovely fragrance.

You have permanent summer, donĀ“t you?

Katarina .... I wish we did have a permanent summer, but sadly we don't. In the part of the North Island where we live we usually have wet springs, cold but not too cold winters with very few frosts & no snow at all, autumns can be quite mild, & with a bit of luck from January on through to April we experience hot weather, with February & March being our hottest months. Officially, December is early summer but the weather can be erratic during that month & Christmas can be quite cool & wet, but not always.

Hi Dwillis, thank you very much for your information. I never realised that the weather on Island is so different from continental - I just thought your summers are colder and more wet then ours and you have less cold winters thanks to the sea. For me is the information on your summer starting in December really surpirising.
Mary rose looks like very hardy and vigorously growing sort. What is its height?

Hi Katarina. The height of this particular rose when fully grown is around 1.2 or 1.5 metres, if I remember correctly. Most of the roses I have put in recently are either of those two heights, apart from the two climbers of course. I just took another photo of this rose today, because a week on, it is now smothered in beautiful roses. It's amazing how quickly most of the recently-planted roses have grown. Our wet spring is obviously suiting them, & on days when it does not rain, I water them.

Enjoy your summer. Your garden must be reaching its most colourful period.

What a beautiful rose Dwyllis. You must be really delighted. You are now reaping the rewards of all your planning - when you were indisposed after your operation. I could feel your frustration with not being able to get out in the garden. Really pleased for you!!
