This nursery had several Mangosteen. The people at this nursery said mangosteen grows outside in the ground, in San Diego, CA...I am very incredulous. Mangosteen is an equatorial tree which is incredibly tropical. Photo taken June 12, 2011.

These little trees came in from South Florida. However, I've never seen a mangosteen growing outdoors in San Diego it needs extremely high heat and humidity all year.
Garcinia xanthochymus grows well and fruits in Southern California. It has most of the anti-oxidant properties as mangosteen.
Here's some photos.

I think the opinion of people into that on various fruit boards is that its not THE Mangosteen but a hardier relative.
I dont know..but that thought came to me again Alex, when I saw some for sale up here.
