Rosa rugosa, 'Hansa'

Rosa rugosa, 'Hansa' (Rosa rugosa (Rugosa rose))

The hansa is good and hardy, bears bloom all through the summer and carries a strong classic rose scent. This shrub I'm hoping is strong enough to winter in the box up by the road, adding low maintenance color to a hard spot.

Thank you! It is a wonder. Glossy almost leathery green leaves with a strong fold along the veins and vivid deep pink blooms with a strong smell. No bigger than five foot tall maximum, it should be easy enough to manage, and very hardy. Looks very available too from the garden centre right. It gets very large round hips, but they don't usually mature in my climate so I haven't used them. The moose got them this year. It was still blooming right through the first weeks of -0C before a morning moose munch. All the leaves on all the shrubs where gone, and all these leaves, hips, buds and flowers on this rose. The top 3 feet of the new clematis, also still blooming.

More to post still......lol

I am very dissappointed as we do not have this rose in our gardencenters. I ordered it this year from the Czech republic. They wrote to me in the autumn, that this year unfortunately something happened to this type of rr. It is in contradiction to the fact, that it is very hard. I think they did not have it, too, just make their web offer more rich then it is in fact.
I wish you to enjoy its fragrance for many summers.

I hope you can get one Katarina, it is a real wonder. I can't wait for it to grow on and I'll be sharing all that here. :-)

Thank you. :-)

Greenthumb, is it a big shrub?

It could get pretty large in width, but stops at 4-5 feet.

E.g. around 150 cm? I thought it is bigger.

This Hansa rose says just 4-5ft, 125-150cm. There are much bigger shrub roses. Other hansa roses that have been in for years around town get large around, but don't get much height. I love it. It might get larger with support like against a wall or along a porch. Some things dwarf a little here just from the cold.
