Monkey plant is widely used as a ground cover in the Botanical Building in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. It can be easily used as a ground cover here in shade. Photo taken Nov. 14, 2011.

Yes, many Ruellia species love the SF Bay Area. I had this plant also up there. I've never grown it here in San Diego, though.

I had that for years..did great,no cold bothered it. Then,one in one week snails ate every bit of it. I was sure something would sprout back...never did. I haven't seen it for sale.
