Early Summer in N.E. Downunder - Planchonia careya or Cocky Apple flower

Wow, I looove this!

It's native to northern parts of Australia and the biggest concentration of these trees is here in my particular corner of north-eastern Oz. It's rather an ugly little tree and the blooms only appear in the late afternoon and drop off by the next morning. If you didn't know about them, you might miss them!

Do you harvest the edible fruit? Does it taste good?

No I've never tried the fruit, Andy! It doesn't really look all thta appetising I have to say!

I'm guessing it's a lot like some Syzygium species.

Yep, you're right! They are very similar.

Woops, I forgot to add ... except the fruit of the Planchonia is green and a little more egg shaped.

How interesting! The leaves look like those of the Camellia.
