Oh dear, that's a real shame Andy! Mine do get infested with mealy bugs a little, but otherwise I've never had much trouble with any of them.
This particular variety has just taken off wonderfully and is just covered in these wonderful bracts and flowers right now. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I'm sold now.

It's such a beautiful plant! I don't see where this plant is available in the U.S. Maybe it'll become available soon.
My plant was invested with spider mites, mealy bugs, caterpillars and more. I used a systemic insecticide and it didn't help. It was a loosing battle. Maybe this is another reason why it's rarely grown here.

Wow, they sure did get infested! I wonder what it is about the environment and / or climate there that could result in such infestation?

Yes, during winter and early spring it can be very dry...with very low humidity. These conditions can cause severe spider mite problems. This is the reason why I have very few houseplants.

I'm am so, so envious! lol! :>)
What a gorgeous looking Mussaenda!
My plant died this year. It was invaded by bugs and finally succumbed (it attracted every known bug in San Diego, I think). I'm done with this plant for a while! :>)
