Have passed this tree many times and thought how attractive the peach coloured fruits are......think it's a Sorbus.

did you know the scottish clans each have a tree?
the rowan is the tree associated with OH family name.

It is not a very big Tree J..The one by me is in the school grounds. Hangs over the fence, the berries are stunning! The autumn leaf is like a bonfire.

i wonder if those berries are safe with the children around?

Never heard of a problem with rowan...

21 Dec, 2011

No that's true, I think you can have rowan jelly?

Beautiful shot Meadowland. I'm arriving late, and i was thinking pyracanthus, but you've discovered its identity already. :-) What a beauty. I would find myself lost in it each time if I passed it daily.

My (Scottish) grandad had a rowan arch growing over their gate...lots of people did in those days - it was to keep evil/witches from crossing their thresh-holds, I think...

The little birds always built their nests in them... :)

I thought I had posted a picture of the one near me, but it seems not. I am not trying to twist your arm J..but have a look at the autumn leaf..you could squeeze one in.

The berries catch the moonlight as well..

I'm with you, Pimpernel - I'd always have one as well (couldn't get one in France)
...just not near a washing line...red stains impossible to get out...

It's beautiful isn't it...I have sorbus 'Pink Pagoda' but I love all the Sorbus trees. They all have wonderful colour and the leaves are beautiful as well. I haven't seen my Mistle Thrush this year though. He has been every year so far, in October, and stripped the fruits...this year there were several song thrushes and blackbirds...I think they have claimed the territory. The compact vars. are particularly lovely aren't they....lovely neat habit..perfect for a small garden.

That's funny you should say that about the Cotoneaster Julia. This is the first year ever that my Cotoneasters have been stripped of their fruits before Christmas. The blackbirds have never gone for them before but now they have discovered them!. The Pyracanthus have been stripped too...so there are no fruits left in the garden at all!
