Saw this in a London restaurant, I think it looks stunning but Im not too sure its practical? How would you water this properly?

exactly what we worked out must be happening, they looked so lovely but it wont work!! i thought the contractor may need to remove some and replace??
How long would you give it in these conditions?

The bowl is probably replaced every couple of weeks........

i think that may be a case of more money than sense?

Not really - they'll have a fixed price contract. The contractor will probably rotate often to prevent plant rot, or to put it another way, loss of stock!

ah, yes, good point. I have re-titled the photo!

Def a contractor..I used to use them once a fortnight they come and change the display for potted plants and once a week for cut displays.
16 Jan, 2012
hehe - been there, done that;-) once a week cut displays (early Monday mornings at work to do them and deliver. once a week or two weeks to visit places to do the maintenance job. Pain in the a.....s to water something like that - but what boss said poor interior plant maintenance technician had to do:(
Read me and others, lol.
And as you said - plant not looking good anymore - bin it. Well in some cases they ended up in my home. Now it looks like a jungle, lol.

Very nice arrangement , my neighbour always has Orchids in flower sometimes for weeks at a time ,he tells me he never waters them that he only sprays them ....
16 Jan, 2012
lucky neighbour! i spray mine each week but i also let water drain through their pots every week.

I do as well Sticki , I'm envious because he is like Meanie with Orchids it's not fair !!

they are good aren't they these experts ~ perhaps they have green thumbs as well as fingers??
16 Jan, 2012
I just get lucky!
It's taken me years to get a decent re-bloom on a Vylstekeara........
17 Jan, 2012
Not entirely lucky meanie, it helps to know what you are doing and what to expect! Oh and having patience.
17 Jan, 2012
There is a fair element of luck involved Sticki!!
17 Jan, 2012
ok, i will accept that, but it helps to know a bit too!!

Always learning...........

very true, be boring if we knew everything though! on that basis i will never be bored.

Lovely flowers, but I don't know much about orchids (except the wild variety of orchis - not quite the same thing, I know) and I wouldn't want them in my old-fashioned home, they'd look totally out of place! Big bowls of daisies would be better.

Saw recently that they are happier just sprayed too:-)

is it real? some look so real now but arent. pretty though
24 Jan, 2012
thats a thought BA but i think mine would need more than that.
yes sanbaz it is, although we dont think it will stay there long.
24 Jan, 2012
You're right, Sanbaz - there are some amazing artificial flowers nowadays. We use them quite often because our house is so dark, and very little that is real lasts more than a few days inside. No-one seems to have noticed, and they aren't the same as the blue plastic tulips you used to get free with Daz so many years ago!

Not practical at all!
Penny to a pound that it is done by a contracted plant supplier - when the display is over it'll be replaced by another and these orchids potted back up individually until they're ready to be re-used (back in bud).
