The Spiral Gingers are starting to bloom in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. I wish I could get mine to look so good! lol! :>) Photo taken March 21, 2012.

You're not suppose to grow gingers from seeds. They grow from rhizomes or off-shoots.

Costus is not the easiest to grow outside a warm tropical or subtropical climate.

Of course, you should know me by now! :>)
I have Costus barbatus in the front yard. It died back down to the roots last summer. I'm going dig it up and plant it back into a pot. I'm really hoping I can get it to grow again! :>)
The many plants in Balboa Park are very healthy and more than 8ft/2.4m tall. I'm not sure what the secret is to growing this plant...maybe I'll find out this year. :>)
