This tree is tropical! It would never survive outside a subtropical/tropical climate. It's native to south-eastern Africa.

Many other chestnuts grow all around that area. Imported but many very mature now as they took very successfully.

There's some chestnut trees which are native to northern California.
Calodendron capenseis is not a true chestnut tree (it's actually related to Citrus).
