These have ventured out of the woods and are growing happily in the sunshine of the meadow/lawn.

That's lovely to see, Lori. It's a bit of a struggle to get them to flower in my garden.

Don`t worry Oji...they take 7 years from seed. The blooms are the fruiting parts of the plant and the leaves produce food. It has a submerged root system, similar to a rhizome, which takes that amount of time to establish. When the `trillium`emerges people pick it with the three leaves attached...to do so robs the plant of it`s food factory and the root dies back. For that reason they are protected in the wild. The neighbour`s pigs love the rhizomes and they have found a way under the electric fence and turned up in the woods and (brazen creatures) even in the front meadow! they eat the underground part of the plant and have cleaned out the neighbour`s bush...now they are expanding into mine! Not for long I can assure you...don`t believe in fire arms but I wonder if a bull whip would deter them.
