Where did these poppies come from?

Where did these poppies come from?

And what are their chances of remaining????

If you let them seed they will self sow. It is possible that when the soil was disturbed the seeds which can live for a long time in the soil came to life. They are annuals and will form seed pods. You can let them self seed or collect the seed and sow them where you want them to grow. They are Papavar rhoeas.

This was the chicken dust-bowl last year, Sg...is there any chance that the poppies will keep doing their thing with the chickens around?

primary colonisers, SL...
...and the chicken pen did look like a first world war trench before I left...

I might have to shut off sections and move them around... :)

You can always dry the seed pods and when they dry you can collect the seeds and just sprinkle them around and rake them in. You will probably find them all over the garden anyway as the wind throws the seeds around. I have Welsh poppies, the yellow version of this one and also an orange poppy. I don't do anything and they do literally spread all over the place. The new young seedlings are easily rooted out if they happen to be in the wrong place. The red poppy was chosen as the symbol for Remembrance Day because after WW1 the first flower to colonise the war torn battlegrounds were these red poppies. They were seen as a symbol that the people killed in wars would be remembered because they laid down their lives to give us hope of a better future.

....and why is there an old table in the chicken run? ;))

There are millions of them on the roadsides and in the fields around here, Sg...mostly, though not all, red. I will collect the seeds, if the ducks and chickens don't eat them before they get that far....and try growing them up to re-plant in there. They do look nice in the chicken pen...and they also give the birds some shade.

Lol! That's not an old table...that's my heath-robinson contraption to stop their food from getting wet!! :)))

You will probably find you will get them from now on without collecting the seeds.

That would be great, Sg...I've been racking my brain trying to think what might grow in there, without being eaten or scraped up!
