Trilliums turning pink... (trillium)

When the flowers are nearly finished the petals turn a soft pink and whither.

nice! I bought some this year finally, they were "bargain bin" trilliums from Gardens of the Blue Ridge so I will have to wait until next year for flowers.

Good luck, Sticki...hope it works out for you.
Lauram: Don't be disappointed if it takes 7 years! How old were the rhizomes? if they were 2 year you have five more to go. They like to spread. and put up leaves every year to nourish the plant underground. The blossom should not be picked with the leaves ...as most people pick the leaves and all...and that deprives the plant of it's food factory. A true wildflower they do best when left to their own devices!

thanks lori, i wont pick it dont worry! its quietly in the bed nearest the woodland and has nice humus rich soil. unfortunately i didnt think to ask how old it was when i bought it, i have only had this a few weeks!!

then you have many years ahead to enjoy it...as it takes such a long time to bring to bloom it may have required some extra time in the nursery and as a result was probably a bit expensive. Sounds like you have everything prepared for it perfectly.

These were leftover trilliums so to speak so they looked a little ragged, but some had blooms on them already, so I know I'll have flowers on at least a few of them next year! I was happy to get them no matter what they looked like since they'd been discounted quite a bit. They are expensive here as well, you have to beware of cheap trilliums since if they're cheap they're probably wild-harvested, but I like ordering from Blue Ridge because they propagate all their plants. You might pay more for the plants but it's worth it.

Hope so, thanks lori

It really is exciting to find a treasure like that, Lauram. It's illegal here to take the trilliums from the wild. Will look forward to your results. :-)

They seem very expensive here Lori. I suppose it's the time taken to flower.
