That is awesome Simbad!! Is it actually black? Where did you buy the seeds from? I might give it a go myself ... are they difficult to start from seed?

And would they be happy in clay soil? If not, would they grow in containers?

Sorry, lots of questions, been meaning to look up irises to start some this year but with being so busy at work and with DIY it just hasn't happened ....

Crikey so many comments, everyone likes this then:-), thankyou all :-))
Stripes its actually a very very dark purple when I've look at it closely, it looks even better today the bigger petals are drooping down, love it :-)
Dawn and Garden fairy, I've grown 3 different irises from seed now and find they need a cold snap to kick start them, I sow in autumn in my unheated greenhouse and the seedlings start to appear the following spring, really pleased with these a lovely lady on a swapshop sent me them, only 10 seeds so was really pleased to get 4 plants, mine are growing in heavy clay they just need a sunny spot, you can buy seed for this variety and some other stunners from one of my favourite seed suppliers, Plant World, here's a link, some other lovely varieties too :-))

Thanks for the info Simbad and the good news is they grown in clay soil - as so many things don't seem to like it! I don't have a proper green house unfortunately - I have the cold frame type of things - would they be ok. Or am I better off doing the usual and put the seed tray on a windowsill? (to my OH's chagrin!) LOL

The cold frame would be better Garden fairy then they'll get the chilling they need to germinate :-))

Excellent :) that will be my plant to add for next year then! I always thought germination needs heat ... but doesn't work everyone I see :).

Quite a few seeds need a period of cold to get them started Garen fairy, primulas are another example, you always know which seeds need this by seed packet instructions it'll say to take in and out of the fridge for certain lengths of time, I'd forget to do that it seems such a performance so prefer to sow autumn and the seeds appear in spring when they've had a cold snap then a bit of warmth, probably takes longer but I find it easier :-))

Sounds like a good and quick solution Simbad... we'll see if it works for me too ;)
