Harmless, Paul, although like many of our snakes they can be testy and quick to strike. When I worked for Animal Control, people would call up screaming at the sight of one of these guys and I would say, "oh, the bite is not that bad" which only made them freak out more!
These snakes are actually known to prey on venomous snakes.
