My A cathrtica died! :>( I think the pot it was in, kept the soil soggy! My Allamanda 'Cherries Jubilee' is going into the ground very soon -- maybe tomorrow.

Isn't killing A.cathartica regarded as something of an achievement!!

I nearly bought a Solandra maxima the other day - it was growing and blooming as a short shrub so I was a little unsure as to how viable this would be long term.

I wouldn't say it's an achievement. I do know that A cathartica does not like wet feet. Even though, A cathartica is widely available in San Diego, it's considered borderline in many parts of San Diego County.

Solandra maxima can be grown as a shrub. You can grow it outdoors in summer, then cut it back drastically before you bring it indoors. It's very tolerant of being cut back.

The Solandra maxima - Cup of Gold Vines have been in bloom since January. I just recently realized how widely this vine is planted around San Diego (it's everywhere).

If it wasn't one of my favourite vines I would offer my congratulations!!!

May have to go back for the Solandra then - 60mile round trip!

My favorite nursery (where I purchased this plant) had many A. cathartic, schottii...but not many A. 'Cherries Jubilee'.

Solandra maxima is worth it! The flowers are spectacular and smell like coconut-vanilla.

It's done very well over the last 5 years. When I first purchased it, I wasn't sure because I had never grown one before here. Actually, it growing so fast and blooming so well I've have to cut it back a little. It can take over. I have to cut it back a few times in summer.

Thats great it dome so well and cutting it back will also help it survive in drought not putting to much strain on it.☺

I actually hate cutting it back! All the flowers bloom at the tips...so I have to cut a lot of flowers buds off. I must be cut back or it'll take over the back yard.

What a shame Andy do you cut it back at a certain time of year so you do t miss it flowering.

I cut it back a little after winter and during summer. Right now so many of the flowers were burned off the plant due to the extremely high temps.

Thats a shame the flowers are burned so you cut back twice a year it must like it as it flowers so well.0

There's so many new buds. It'll bloom for at least 4 months longer.
