Actually, if you lived in California, most likely you wouldn't be growing these plants. Many are noxious weeds. Some species, like Nicotiana glauca grows out of almost solid rock on the sides of the mesas here in San Diego.

I've just ordered seeds for N.glauca as it is a nice borderline hardy shrub here!!

I would think N. glauca would be hardy there. It grows all the way up to the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. I think it only becomes a 30ft/10m tall tree in mild climates, though.

Those that have grown it here have had a nice shrub out of it as opposed to a tree, which is what I'm after.

Not sure how they grow there...however, it tends to be an extremely fast grower...to about 12ft/3.7m tall within less than a year (here in California)

Yes, I would think so. It grows fast even out of asphalt (although it doesn't grow as tall).
